ALL I EVER WANTED, a miniature cello concerto

ALL I EVER WANTED, a miniature cello concerto

Instrumentation: Violoncello Solo, Flute, Bassoon, Percussion, Piano, Violin, Viola, and Violoncello

Duration: 7 min

Program note:

This is yet another of my attempts to compose a piece that resonates with what Chogyam Trungpa describes as “the Genuine Heart of Sadness”.

“…if you put your hand through your rib cage and feel for it, there is nothing there except for tenderness. You feel sore and soft, and if you open your eyes to the rest of the world, you feel tremendous sadness…this experience of sadness is unconditioned. It occurs because your heart is completely exposed. There is no skin or tissue covering it; it is pure raw meat. Even if a tiny mosquito lands on it, you feel so touched. Your experience is raw and tender and so personal.”

A four-note figure tirelessly strings the pieces together in this work, its calling unanswered, as it seems. While “The Genuine Heart of Sadness” aspires to tenderness and emotional vulnerability, this piece also reflects unanswered yearnings. I hope my music has grown to hold both sentiments.
